BIMBY is an online resource (bimby.org.uk), which guides people through three workshops. The workshops cover the following:
– Workshop 1: brings the community together to share knowledge, get an understanding of peoples’ skills and establishes broad requirements for any new development;
– Workshop 2: identifies suitable areas for new homes; and
– Workshop 3: identifies what new buildings should look like.
The product of this work is a comprehensive and professional BIMBY Housing Manual, which can then accompany any planning application for new homes in the area or be used as evidence to underpin policies as part of a local or neighbourhood plan.
BIMBY and Neighbourhood Planning
While no experience is needed to use BIMBY, professional workshop facilitation can greatly enhance the productivity and quality of the work produced. The Princes’ Foundation is therefore offering BIMBY Housing workshops delivered by professionals with neighbourhood planning experience to support groups preparing neighbourhood plans. Neighbourhood planning groups can use grant support to fund this work as part of the 2018-2022 neighbourhood planning support programme. A quote from the Prince’s Foundation would need to be submitted as part of any grant application for this work.
BIMBY Workshop Structure
There are three packages of workshop support, depending on the complexity and requirements of your area: BIMBY-lite, BIMBY-medium and BIMBY-full.
BIMBY-lite:
This would involve an initial call with the neighbourhood planning group, an evening drop-in session to cover Workshop 1, and then a full day covering workshops 2 and 3. A follow up call would also be offered to pick up any queries from the group and your BIMBY facilitator will feedback any comments on the emerging Housing Manual being prepared by the group before it is completed.
Costs
£2,250 + VAT + expenses (travel, accommodation, subsistence)
BIMBY-medium:
This would involve an initial visit to assess the area context and meet the neighbourhood planning group and any key stakeholders. An evening drop-in session would cover Workshop 1 and a full day workshop the following day to cover workshop 2. A call would then be arranged with the group to discuss the study areas for the collection of good local building types to support Workshop 3. A full day covering workshop 3 would then be run with a subsequent call and review organised for the BIMBY Housing Manual before it is completed.
Costs
BIMBY-medium: £4,500 + VAT + expenses (travel, accommodation, subsistence)
BIMBY-full:
This would involve an initial visit to assess the area context and meet the neighbourhood planning group plus any key stakeholders. An evening drop-in session would cover Workshop 1 and a full day workshop the following day to cover Workshop 2. Some development time would be allowed to work up a framework plan to shape future development in liaison with the local authority. A call would then be arranged with the group to discuss the study areas for the collection of good local building types to support Workshop 3. A full day covering Workshop 3 would then be run with a subsequent call and time for helping to collate the building types and materials section for the BIMBY Housing Manual before it is completed.
Costs
BIMBY-full: £6,750 + VAT + expenses (travel, accommodation, subsistence)
